"Many
heroic exploits and chivalrous adventures are related to me
which exist only in the regions of fancy. With me the world has
taken great liberties, and yet I have been but a common man." ....Daniel Boone

The 1930 McCreary census is a great one to own even for those who are not actively
researching family, because most of us will find parents, grandparents, and many many
cousins in this one. The population of the county in 1930 was 14,627. That figure was
taken from this census so even though I have not personally counted every name in my
transcription, we can assume there are 14,627 people listed in the book. There are 17 questions
and answers that apply to each person. This is one that you will enjoy holding in your hands and
browsing through at your leisure.
There are many people enumerated in the 1930 McCreary County census who were from
Tennessee or from other parts of Kentucky, as well as other states, having come to the
McCreary County area to work for the coal mines and the lumber mills of Stearns Coal &
Lumber Company.
In addition to the census, the book contains;
- Complete every-last-name and all heads of household INDEX.
- Explanation of the enumeration districts.
- Map of the county; Abbreviations & Explanations; About This Publication; etc.
- A 3 page article on what life was like in McCreary County in 1930.
- An article by Marjorie Wheeldon who grew up in Stearns and is one of those enumerated
in this census. Marjorie taught school in McCreary County and became the first female
basketball coach in the state of Kentucky. She was kind enough to write about her view of Stearns as a child, exclusively for this book.
- Radios in 1930 and the people in McCreary County who owned one.
